Natural Stone Institute once again awards the overall winners of its prestigious annual award for outstanding natural stone works. TheArt Wall that greets patients at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital wins the 2021 Pinnacle Award in the "commercial interiors" category.
With this project MGI explores the realm of three-dimensional surfaces and geometric effects. Thus, trapezoidal shapes and plays of volume on a double wall all in marble dominate the welcoming space of the entrance hall. The design, which bears the signature of architectural firm Perkins Eastman, draws inspiration from rectilinear and abstract forms with a rhythmic and precise rhythm. It is a dynamic cladding that somehow invokes the energy of an open, moving place within which to find a solid, safe dimension. The paneling is inspired by abstract art and realizes a volumetry made of solids and voids, light and shadow in dynamic intersections.
The architects combined the soul and spirit of the place, creating a corner wall consisting of two panels each measuring 8 x 6 meters made of Calacatta Caldia® marble with uniform color and directional veining-transforming the reception hall into a fine art installation. The material was carefully selected from a single block of extra quality, mapping each slab with advanced photographic scanners so that it was chromatically uniform with regular veins.
The wall moves away from the concept of the traditional wall. In its composition made of longitudinal bands on 5 overlapping levels of thickness molded into projections and recesses it reveals a rhythm between solids and voids, a collage of pieces that weave a decidedly original optical effect. Straight lines meeting in diagonal intersections alter the regular forms while maintaining them in the perimeter structure. Thus the space is harmonious and diverse: free from monotony.
The wall is both a decorative element and a work of art of fine technical workmanship. Each element is perfectly cut to size and interlocked with the next one according to defined guidelines on a steel supporting structure. A composite material consisting of Calacatta Caldia® and Honeycomb (aluminum cells enclosed in impregnated glass fabric) was used, the latter material having excellent strength characteristics combined withextreme lightness. The overhead light directed from top to bottom makes the composition even more striking and opens up new perspectives.
Completing the composition is the Caldia® marble desk with a massive and imposing Lotus Grey top.
