The white Carrara marble statue will be unveiled on Friday, June 7, in the garden in front of the Post Office building on Eugenio Chiesa Avenue in Massa.
The work by Francesco Siani, created in 2018 by Marmi e Graniti d'Italia Spa and donated to the Municipality of Massa, was conceived for the stage performance of Sophocles' Antigone in the marble quarries of our territory, a play conceived and directed by Gennaro Di Leo, performed by students and former students of the Theatre Company of the Liceo Classico Pellegrino Rossi of Massa and awarded special mention at the "Silver Lion for Creativity in Schools" of the Venice Biennale.
The classic myth of Antigone has been brought to life through an imposing sculpture symbolizing struggle and determination: the protagonist of the tragedy-first performed in Athens in 442 BCE-is a young woman capable of defying the tyrant Creon and the laws of the polis in order to give burial to her beloved brother Polynices.
The work - with a total weight of nearly 4 tons - consists of two parts: the statue (4 meters high) and the base (90 cm high), both made of white Carrara marble. From the very important choice of the block to its workmanship, Antigone in its being solid, sustainable and eternal, confirms MGI Group's commitment to supporting initiatives in the area, in synergy with the Municipality of Massa for the preservation, enhancement and sharing with the public of the know-how and conspicuous artistic heritage of Carrara marble.
